Companies to Avoid

There are three kinds of companies that we would advise not to buy from.

[1] Big corporations
Procter & Gamble, Unilever, L’Oreal, Nestle, Johnson & Johnson, Beiersdorf, Reckitt Benckiser, GlaxoSmithKline, etc, have no ethical values, are heavily involved in animal testing as well as other animal exploitation industries, use cheap labour, and destroy the environment with their chemical loaded products. Some of their products might contain no animal ingredients, but the fact that they were tested on animals makes them unsuitable for vegans.

[2] Parent Company involved in animal testing.
Some companies could offer products suitable for vegans, but we would still not recommend them as they are owned by corporations involved in animal testing. It means they no longer have genuine cruelty-free testing policies. These companies are better known as “sell-outs”.

[3] Weak animal testing policy.
Some companies claim that they do no test their products on animals while at the same time offer no guarantee that they don’t.
Other companies carry a 5 year rolling rule, which means that they are directly or indirectly involved in animal testing, depending on when suits them.

The point is that if you are committed to Veganism, animal rights and environmental issues, know the truth behind the brands.

Know who owns what.

◄ Tom's of Maine ►

Tom's of Maine is an American company founded in 1970.
Tom's of Maine fit in the category 2.

Parent Company = Colgate-Palmolive.
Although Tom's of Maine makes very good products that contain no animal ingredients, we do not recommend buying from them as any profits made by a subsidiary could be used to fund the activities of that parent company.
Some vegans will use this brand, others won't. It's up to you to decide what is best.

More info: Tom's of Maine, or Tom's of Greed?

◄ Original Source ►

Original Source is a company from England.
Original Source fits in the category 2.

Parent Company = PZ Cussons.
Same thing as Tom's of Maine. If you buy their products, what will PZ Cusson do with your money?
Some vegans will use this brand, others won't. It's up to you to decide what is best.

More info: Origin Source, an Ethical company?

◄ The Body Shop ►

The Body Shop is a company from England.

The Body Shop fits in the category 2 and 3.

Parent Company = L'Oreal/Nestle.
Poor and misleading Animal testing Policy.

More info: The Body Shop, find the loophole!

◄ Ecover ►

Ecover is a company from Belgium.
Ecover fits in the category 3.

5 year rolling rule animal testing policy.
Products tested on Daphnias, who are tiny crustaceans.
Products tested on rabbit blood, taken from "rabbit farming".
Some vegans will use this brand, but most won't as Ecover refuses to operate on a fixed cut off date.
