Home Cleaning

The biggest issue with products which clean the toilets, sinks, carpets, baths, windows, dishes, etc, is that of animal testing and the presence of toxic ingredients. Just like cosmetics and beauty care products, household products undergo a great deal of senseless animal testing before being put on the market.

The companies below offer some great vegan products that are ethical, efficient, environmentally friendly and not too expensive for the high quality you get.

As they last a long time, it is worth paying a little bit more than the conventional products found in supermarkets, loaded with chemicals, animal ingredients and tested on animals.

Please read on the right column about how to make your own natural, biodegradable household cleaning products.

◄ DIY Cleaning ►

vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice all have natural cleaning powers that rival manufactured cleaning solutions. They are easy and safe to use.

vinegar is an effective cleaner in removing soils and mineral deposits such as hard water films, from almost every surface of your home.
It is also well known for its antimicrobial properties: it is effective against a broad range of bacteria, reducing and retarding the growth of these organisms to an acceptable level for safety.

lemon juice is acidic and provides antibacterial and antiseptic properties for cleaning.

When baking soda is used as a cleaner in paste form or dry on a damp sponge, its crystalline structure provides a gentle abrasion that helps to remove dirt without scratching sensitive surfaces. It's mild alkalinity works to turn up fatty acids contained in dirt and grease into a form of soap that can be dissolved in water and rinsed easily.

Check below for cleaning recipes.

◄ Deodorize ►

Most commercial air fresheners do not freshen the air at all. Instead, they mask one odor with another, coat your nasal passages with an undetectable oil film, or diminish your sense of smell with a nerve-deadening agent.

Carpets:
Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet with your favorite essential oil. Wait about 1hour. Hoover.

Air freshener:
Boil in a saucepan water with cinnamon and cloves for a fragrant smell.
When cold, pour the mixture in a spray bottle and spray around the house.
To disinfect a room, pour in a spray bottle water and a few essential drops of tea tree oil, lavender or eucalyptus oil.

◄ Surface cleaner ►

Sink cleaner:
Scrub with baking soda and water.

Microwave cleaner:
Place a bowl of water with 15 drops tea tree oil in the microwave. Heat for about 2 minutes. Wipe out with a wet cloth.

Oven cleaner:
Mix some baking soda - I just toss maybe two tablespoons with into a cup, with some water to make a thin paste. Use an old toothbrush or bristle brush to scrub it down.

All purpose cleaner:
Dissolve 4 tbsp baking soda in 240ml warm water in a spray bottle for a general cleaner.
Use baking soda on a damp sponge. Baking soda will clean and deodorize all kitchen and bathroom surfaces.

Window/Glass cleaner:
Mix 120ml cider vinegar with 3 liters of water - spray and wipe.

Toilet cleaner:
Sprinkle some baking soda and lemon juice into your toilet. When you eventually come back to use it, scrub it with a toilet brush.
Spray cider vinegar on the seat, sprinkle with baking soda and scrub. Wash with water.
Use a tissue/cloth with water and a few drops of tea tree oil to disinfect the area.

◄ Surface polish ►

Furniture:
Mix 60ml lemon juice with 120ml olive oil. Wipe down furniture with a soft cloth and the solution.

Wood Floor:
Mix equal parts olive oil and cider vinegar. Apply a very thin coat and rub -you can simply stand on an old towel and rub the floor with your feet.

Silver polish:
Rub silver with toothpaste (vegan!) and rinse with water.

◄ Washing Mashine ►

Whites and Brights:
Add a 1/2 cup of baking soda to the wash when you add your regular liquid detergent.
The baking soda has been known to give you whiter whites, brighter brights, and odor free clothing.
