Vegan Cosmetics

When buying vegan cosmetics, there are a few points to keep in mind:

When a product says “cruelty free”, it simply means that there was no animal testing done on the ingredients or the finished product, not that it is vegan.
When a product says “no animal ingredients”, it doesn’t mean “no animal testing”; the product and its ingredients might have been tested on animals, therefore making it unsuitable for vegans.

Some common ingredients found in cosmetics that are not vegan include:

* Carmine,cochineal = Red coloring made from crushed beetles. Mostly used in lipsticks.(also referred as Crimson Lake, Natural Red 4, CI75470.)
* Lanolin = wool fat.
* Beeswax/pollen/propolis/ cera alba/ honey = bee derived products.
* Lard, tallow = animal fat.
* Lactose/ lactalbumin/whey = milk products.
* Silk derivative
* Elastin (from cows)

Some ingredients -such as glycerin- can be derived from plant or animal sources, so make sure it is mentioned as coming from a vegetable source.

Being a vegan doesn't mean that you can no longer wear make-up. On the contrary, there are great brands out there which offer high quality products while being quite affordable. Below is the list of all the brands we could find which sell vegan products.

So far, these products can only be ordered through the internet, except Urban Decay which can be bought in Debenhams stores. You can also ask your local health food store to stock the cosmetic range of these brands.
